Carbon footprint!

A carbon footprint is a method used to measure the amount of carbon dioxide that we release from what we use annually. It also shows the amount of emission of greenhouse effect gases produced from our daily activities. Environmental organizations have made an initiative to create websites where people are able to calculate there carbon footprint easily, for instance I used the two websites http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/ and http://www.myfootprint.org/ and answered a series of multiple choice questions. It is significant to put in mind that there is no exact standardized measure in which carbon footprint is measured, in the sites above its was measured in earths. The questions in the survey included electricity usage, the type of transportation and consumption of food. After answering all the questions the websites gave a number which represents how many earths we need to live in a balanced environment.

We were asked to take the average of both websites. My carbon footprint was 14.65. Compared to my `classmates’ footprints I was ranked third place out of five, as the highest was 23.17 earths and the lowest was 13.96 earths. Surprisingly compared to the UAE carbon footprint which is 34.78 my classmates and I ranked low.

To conclude I would highly recommend that students help in educating people about the effect of carbon and greenhouses gases in order to raise awareness amongst our communities. Moreover, it is better using renewable resources than using non renewable ones. Finally, sharing rides to college will decrease the amount of cars used and therefore the amount harmful gases produced.

An Inconvenient Truth Argument

The documentary of an inconvenient truth presenting former Vice president Al Gore highlights the environmental disaster global warming. Similar to any film there are review that give the film a high rate while others give it a low rate. This essay will compare between two reviews.

The first review by Scott which was negative looks at the documentary from a different perspective by claiming that the main objective was to advocate Al Gore rather than the issue of global warming (Scott). His criticism arises from the facts of the different scenes of the documentary that talk about gore’s life. He also mentioned that if the movie was truly just to raise the awareness of global warming the disruptive scenes of Gore’s life wouldn’t be added.

The second review which was positve by David Edwards, states that the film was a clear investigation of global warming. For instance, he highlights that in the past 14 years ten of the hottest years on record occurred, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air is increasing. For this reason, Al Gore recommends that action must be taken by politician in order to save the plant(Edwards).

While global warming is a hotly debated subject, In my opinion the documentary highlighted the awareness of global warming which is exactly what people need to understand the circumstances. I totally diagree that the movie's objective was to advocate Gore, as it was clear that the emphasis was on global warming.

He also recommends ways in which each individual can help in the protecting the environment for the future. He displays early pictures of the earth and current ones and shows the effects of global warming and what its looks like. He proposes that the world’s governments need to work collaboratively and take action for a better world
