English 174 and I

English 174 was a unique course as it did not only develop my writing and research skills but in also polished my IT skills that I have not been using lately. I believe that the idea of having a blog encourages students to write well and be creative in order to attract readers and make the blog more interesting. The topic we most discussed this semester was global warming. Having a blog were there are many posting on the effects of global warming , documentaries , carbon foot prints , cool cites and nuclear energy would raise the awareness of this issue as theses blogs can be accessed by internet surfers. With the support of English 175 too, the two courses gave me an opportunity to practice writing based on research instead of just writing what I believe and think, I am looking at facts and figures and summarizing them. This is a technique that I lacked and now became more experienced at. I also learned how to reference MLA which was confusing at the beginning. I hope I will use the writing and IT skills I have learnt this course in the future, and I will continue posting topics that interest me even after the course.

Advantages and disadvantages of Electric cars

Electric cars are very popular these days as there are fuel-free. This is summary of the advantages and disadvantages of electric cars by Himanshu.

To begin with, Electric cars are zero-emission therefore they are friendlier to the environment than ordinary cars. Even though they use electricity which is a form of energy , cars operating on fuel consume more energy then cars operating on electricity, motor vehicle is a mean of transportation modern vehicles share some advantages Another advantage is that some states in the US offer free recharging and parking for such cars.

Despite the advantages there is some downsides .Firstly, electric need regular charging and can only drive from 50 to 100miles after each charge. Another negative point is that is maximum speed is only 50kmph making them only recommended for local destination rather than long distance journeys.

In my opinion electronic cars can help stopping air pollution and I believe that in the years coming technology would evolve and solve the speed and charging issues with current electronic cars.

Cool cities

Planned environmentally friendly cites like Masdar, involve the use of modern technology in order to build new green cities that help in reducing carbon emission. These cities will be built with green roofs that absorb heat and cut down the emission of carbon by 60%. Not denying the fact these cities are an effective approach towards tackling global warming, however cool cites are impractical due to many reasons.

Firstly, cool cites are expensive to build and to live in. This is because the products and material required to structure these cites are costly as a result living in these cities will not be cheap. The second reasons is that not many
People would be able to like in such cites as the population of the UAE which is around 3 million would be hard to accommodate as Masdar can only have 45,700 people. Lastly it might be true that the city as a low footprint however the Co2 emission from building it would not be low.

To conclude I disagree with practicality of cool cities, as I think instead of focusing and spending money on some cities that can not accommodate the world’s population. We can invest in creating other products that are environmentally friendly products and that everyone in the world can take part in.

Carbon footprint!

A carbon footprint is a method used to measure the amount of carbon dioxide that we release from what we use annually. It also shows the amount of emission of greenhouse effect gases produced from our daily activities. Environmental organizations have made an initiative to create websites where people are able to calculate there carbon footprint easily, for instance I used the two websites http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/ and http://www.myfootprint.org/ and answered a series of multiple choice questions. It is significant to put in mind that there is no exact standardized measure in which carbon footprint is measured, in the sites above its was measured in earths. The questions in the survey included electricity usage, the type of transportation and consumption of food. After answering all the questions the websites gave a number which represents how many earths we need to live in a balanced environment.

We were asked to take the average of both websites. My carbon footprint was 14.65. Compared to my `classmates’ footprints I was ranked third place out of five, as the highest was 23.17 earths and the lowest was 13.96 earths. Surprisingly compared to the UAE carbon footprint which is 34.78 my classmates and I ranked low.

To conclude I would highly recommend that students help in educating people about the effect of carbon and greenhouses gases in order to raise awareness amongst our communities. Moreover, it is better using renewable resources than using non renewable ones. Finally, sharing rides to college will decrease the amount of cars used and therefore the amount harmful gases produced.

An Inconvenient Truth Argument

The documentary of an inconvenient truth presenting former Vice president Al Gore highlights the environmental disaster global warming. Similar to any film there are review that give the film a high rate while others give it a low rate. This essay will compare between two reviews.

The first review by Scott which was negative looks at the documentary from a different perspective by claiming that the main objective was to advocate Al Gore rather than the issue of global warming (Scott). His criticism arises from the facts of the different scenes of the documentary that talk about gore’s life. He also mentioned that if the movie was truly just to raise the awareness of global warming the disruptive scenes of Gore’s life wouldn’t be added.

The second review which was positve by David Edwards, states that the film was a clear investigation of global warming. For instance, he highlights that in the past 14 years ten of the hottest years on record occurred, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air is increasing. For this reason, Al Gore recommends that action must be taken by politician in order to save the plant(Edwards).

While global warming is a hotly debated subject, In my opinion the documentary highlighted the awareness of global warming which is exactly what people need to understand the circumstances. I totally diagree that the movie's objective was to advocate Gore, as it was clear that the emphasis was on global warming.

An Inconvenient Truth: Part 1

The documentary “An inconvenient Truth” was directed my Davis Guggenheim. It mainly highlights the former US president Al Gore passion on global warming. Al Gore has been known as an environmental activist and in this film he outlines the scientific facts behind global warming the current effects of it in our environment. He also recommends ways in which each individual can help in the protecting the environment for the future. He displays early pictures of the earth and current ones and shows the effects of global warming and what its looks like. He proposes that the world’s governments need to work collaboratively and take action for a better world

Introduction About Global Warming

Today, global warming is one of the biggest problems facing the whole world. Many scientists have accepted the truth that the earth’s temperature is raising and the icecaps are melting, and oceans rising. In my essay, I will clarify the problems of global warming and talk about possible solutions.

One of the biggest problems happening due to global warming is the rise in temperature. Summers are hotter; winters are no longer as cold as they used to be. The rise in temperature as caused fluctuation on the yearly climate . The other problem is the melting of the icecaps that leads to the rise of sea levels. Hence, the rise of sea levels threats many people living close to the sea, since it can cause floods. In addition rising in sea levels has also caused instability in ocean waves.

There are many solutions but firstly, people need to learn and about the environment and small things they do or buy that can affect it negatively. Once people are aware they will start to respond by buy environmentally friendly products and recycle materials they have.

In conclusion, if each person can make a small change than then no doubt the world will be environmentally friendly.
